When is Data Erasure Absolutely Necessary?

Customer Demand

The Right to be Forgotten allows EU citizens to request removal of their data from your system.

When a server, storage, device or other IT asset is ready to be reused, resold or discarded – any data must be erased.

Physical Destruction vs. Secure Data Erasure

Degaussing may be the cheapest and easiest form of physical destruction for drives. However, degaussing removes data by reducing or eliminating unwanted magnetic fields. But, because SSDs don’t store data magnetically, degaussing does not achieve data sanitization.

Physically shredding SSDs can also be an issue because of shred size. The U.S. National Security Agency recommends a shred width of 2mm or smaller to break through the small memory chips and securely remove the data. Most standard industrial shredders produce much larger fragments — leaving information behind.

Degaussing Risks

• Degaussers don’t affect SSDs, only partially affect hybrid drives
• Additional bending/destruction of HDDs may be required
• Weaker degaussers may not affect newer HDDs
• Risk of physical loss, theft or other compromise

Shredding Risks

• Traditional shredders can fail NSA-recommended maximum shred size (2mm)
• Small chips left intact can leave data vulnerable to access
• Data-dense chips can resist, and even damage, shredders and grinders
• Risk of physical loss, theft or other compromise
